MAGNETIZING SYSTEMS

Magnetizing Systems

Each year millions of magnets and magnetic assemblies are manufactured in our company-owned facilities. Our vertical integration strategy is to control and be accountable to our customers for all of the processes in manufacturing, assembly, coatings, and magnetizing.

Magnetizers are designed and manufactured to meet production requirements.

  • Magnetic Materials: Different magnetic materials require different voltages, currents, and pulsing. Understanding which magnetic materials will be magnetized, the size(s) of the parts, orientations, and speed are some of the factors that need to be considered when designing and manufacturing a magnetizer.
  • Voltage & Current: The main purpose of a magnetizer is to ensure that the magnetic material can be fully saturated by the magnetizing system. The correct voltages, currents and discharge rates are critical to ensuring saturation.
  • Cycle Times & Capacity: Large volume magnetizing may require automatic recharging and multiple discharging capabilities, while low volume or R&D units may only require an operator to charge/discharge the unit manually for each session.
  • Safety: All systems are built to ensure safety during usage.
  • Additional Options: Additional options can be considered once understanding each of the above.

Magnetizing Coils are designed and manufactured to coordinate with the appropriate magnetizer.

  • Pairing with the Magnetizer. Ensuring that the magnetizing coil works with the magnetizer is critical. Knowing the goal of the magnetizing system will allow for the correct pairing of magnetizer and magnetizing coil.
  • Cooling. Magnetizing coils can get hot quickly. If cycle times are short between discharges, a coil can heat up and loss its ability to saturate. Cooling systems are used to ensure coils do not overheat or burn.
  • Number of Poles. Magnetizing coils can be manufactured to magnetize the standard north/south poles, or to magnetize a magnet with multiple poles on the face. The number of poles on a magnet is a direct correlation to the size of the magnet and the precision of manufacturing the coil.
  • Magnetic Material. Just like the need to understand this spec for the magnetizer, the magnetizing coil will be required to handle the voltage and current put through it by the magnetizer.
  • Custom Design. Single magnet magnetizing can be simple, however more complex magnetizing coils can be developed for such applications as rotors with multiple magnets against steel, multipole arrays, or single magnets assembled unmagnetized into a product that needs magnetizing as a final step.
  • For lower volumes, stand-alone magnetizing systems should be adequate.
  • For large volume production, in-line magnetizing systems may be beneficial if magnets need to be magnetized after assembly.

Polymagnet magnetizing uses technology that allows for a pattern of poles placed onto the face of a magnet. These patterns can be placed onto a pair of magnets to mimic the following functions:

  • Latch
  • Spring
  • Alignment
  • Snap
  • Torque
  • Twist
